Community Garden Initiative

A community garden is a plot of land gardened by a group of people using individual or shared beds to produce fruit, vegetables, and plants grown for their appearance. Community gardening provides opportunity to improve physical and mental well-being and strengthens social connections.

Are you a group hoping to start a Community Garden? The Newfoundland and Horticultural Society is pleased to offer support to new community gardens and offers the following suite of support services to help get you on your way:

  1. Site Evaluation:  We can review your proposed site and evaluate its potential to host a successful community garden. If you’re not familiar with how to make such a choice, we can also help with that.

  2. Garden Visit: We can arrange for your group to visit an existing community garden; a hands-on tour that is sure to please and educate.

  3. Learning Resources: Ranging from magazines and books (from our library) to video and practical sessions, we have the resources to help.

  4. Funding: We are providing one-time grants of $250 to assist four new community gardens. We can also provide assistance to identify other funding sources.

Contact us to find out if we can help with your proposed community garden. You can reach us at newfoundlandhort@gmail.com
