‘Friends of Floral Design’
The Floral Design Group (FDG) is a sub-group of ‘The Newfoundland Horticultural Society’ (NHS) so its members belong to both organizations. FDG members have a particular interest in learning about the art of flower arranging in the home and elsewhere. This experience is gained through workshops, demonstrations and the exchange of information.
The Floral Design Group meets regularly during the fall, winter and spring months, on the third Tuesday of the month at 730 p.m. at St. David’s Presbyterian Church Hall on Elizabeth Avenue, St. John’s. There are no meetings in July and August of each year.
Besides the regular meetings each month where members learn new and interesting techniques in floral design, the group also volunteers in the community with workshops for the St John’s Women’s Center a few times throughout the year. They celebrate National Flower Arranging day in May through their ‘Lonely Bouquet’ campaign. Working together with the ladies at the Women’s Centre numerous floral bouquets are designed and ‘planted’ around the city for random people to find and take home. FDG members also delight the public each December by decorating Commissariat House for the festive season, all in the natural and colourful materials used in that period.
Members are also encouraged to provide displays at the NHS's various exhibitions and shows during the year. Some of the most creative displays can be seen each year in July at “Newfoundland Blooms – A Floral Extravaganza”, staged at M.U.N. Botanical Gardens.
